Nate is a Professor of Biological Sciences and the Gillen Director of the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center. Nate's research focuses on the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms that govern the dynamics and distributions of tree populations and communities in temperate and tropical forests. An integrative approach is used in his research. This includes the collection and analysis of trait, phylogenetic, genomic and transcriptomic data in both observational and experimental studies.

Nate began working with ForestGEO in 2001 as a field technician at the Luquillo Forest Dynamics plot, he then carried out the 2006 census of the San Emilio Forest Dynamics Plot and has collaborated widely in the ForestGEO network over the past two decades.

Nate's lab is based in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame.
