Doi Chiang Dao Forest Dynamics Plot

Doi Chiang Dao

Overview

In 2003, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, Thailand (DNP), under the leadership of Sarayudh Bunyavejchewin, established the 16-hectare Doi Chiang Dao Forest Dynamics Plot within the undulating mountainous landscape of the Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Thailand.

The plot is primarily characterized as upper dry seasonal evergreen forest. Forest within the plot is dominated by Dipterocarpus costatus which accounts for 20% of the total basal. None of the other species account for more than 5% of total basal area. Elements of the tree floras of deciduous forest and lower montane forest are also present within the plot. The plot's elevation ranges from 800 to 1,000 meters above sea level. This 16-hectare Forest Dynamics Plot (FDP) includes over 300 species and approximately 17,000 individual trees.

Three censuses of the plot have been conducted to date, occurring in 2003, 2008, and 2018. Funding has been provided by various sources: the DNP supported the initial census in 2003 and the 2008 census, while ForestGEO supported the 2018 census.
