The Kapook Kapieng 16-hectare forest dynamics plot was established in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in 1998 under the direction of Sarayudh Bunyavejchewin of the Royal Forest Department, Thailand. A field crew led by graduates from Kasetsart University conducted the initial census. The plot is situated approximately 3 kilometers north-east of the HKK 50-hectare plot, at an altitude ranging from 531 to 565 meters.
The forest within the Kapook Kapieng FDP is classified as mixed deciduous forest, characterized by large number of deciduous species. During the dry season, both the upper canopy and sub-canopy are predominantly deciduous. The understory is dominated by bamboo. This 16-hectare FDP contains approximately 230 species and about 20,000 individual trees. As in other lowland forest types with long dry seasons, forest fires occur regularly in this ecosystem.
Five censuses of the plot have been conducted to date, occurring in 1998, 2003, 2008, 2015, and 2020. Funding for these efforts has primarily been provided by Sarayudh Bunyavejchewin, with the exception of the 2008 census, which was supported by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, Thailand.
