Vietnam Small Plots

The Southern Institute of Ecology under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has established a network of one 25-ha forest dynamics plot (FDP) and fifteen 1-ha FDPs distributed in almost different key forest ecosystems in southern Vietnam ranging from the eastern coast to the western border and from the sea level to the 1,500 m elevation.

While the 25-ha Bidoup FDP has been established and recensused following the CTFS protocol, the 1-ha FDPs were originally established and censused following the Oxford Forestry Institute protocol (Alder & Synott, 1992) during 2008 to 2012 and five of them were recently recensused following the CTFS protocol in 2021 to 2022.

Nui Chua 1

The Nui Chua 1 Forest Dynamics Plot (NC1 FDP) is located in Nui Chua National Park, Ninh Thuan province, within a lowland deciduous forest. Its approximate coordinates are 11.735392°N 109.219897°E and elevation is about 260 m. There are 93 tree species recorded with total 17,383 stems of DBH ≥ 1cm and a total basal area of 42.4 m². The dominant tree species are Cleistanthus sp., Syzygium sp., Dimorphocalyx sp., Drypetes poilanei, Goniothalamus sp. và Diospyros sp. The local fauna were also recorded in the last census.

Takou 2

Located in Takou Nature Reserve, Binh Thuan province, the Takou 2 Forest Dynamics Plot (Takou2 FDP) is established within a coastal sparse dipterocarp forest at elevation of about 95 m. Its approximate coordinates are 10.808889°N 107.948333°E. There are 26 tree species recorded with total 6,419 stems of DBH ≥ 1cm and a total basal area of 15.9 m². The habitat is chiefly dominated by Shorea roxburghii (Dipterocarpaceae). The local fauna were also recorded in the last census.

Lo Go – Xa Mat 3

The Lo Go – Xa Mat 3 Forest Dynamics Plot (LGXM3 FDP) is located within a lowland evergreen dipterocarp forest in Lo Go – Xa Mat National Park, Tay Ninh province. Its approximate coordinates are 11.584591°N 105.888312°E and elevation is about 24 m. There are 110 tree species recorded with total 6,559 stems and a basal area of 40.8 m². Dipterocarpus dyeri chiefly dominates the forest. The local fauna were also recorded in the last census.

Bu Gia Map 1

This Bu Gia Map 1 Forest Dynamics Plot (BGM1 FDP) is located within a lowland semi-evergreen forest in Bu Gia Map National Park, Binh Phuoc province. Its approximate coordinates are 12.27378°N 107.19331°E and elevation is about 338 m. There are 119 tree species recorded with total 6,266 stems and a basal area of 53.2 m². Dominant tree species are Lagerstroemia calyculata, Casearia flexuosa, Leea rubra and Aporosa serrata. The local fauna were also recorded in the last census.

The Bu Gia Map 2 Forest Dynamics Plot (BGM2 FDP) is also established in Bu Gia Map National Park, Binh Phuoc province and located within a lowland evergreen forest. Its approximate coordinates are 12.27054°N 107.19677°E and elevation is about 362 m. There are 124 tree species recorded with total 5,533 stems and a basal area of 45.6 m². Dominant tree species are Dipterocarpus alatus, Lagerstroemia calyculata, Millettia sp. and Diospyros sp. The local fauna were also recorded in the last census
