Gulinqing
Overview
The 25-ha Gulinqing Forest Dynamics Plot was established in 2021 at Southeast Yunnan, Southwest China. The plot is exactly located at the Sino-Vietnamese border and at the Tropic of Cancer with the rough geographical coordinate 22.73°N, 104.00°E. Geographically, it is a part of the Red River Fault Zone and Asian Karst critical zone. Its topography is a karst depression with a 83 meters altitude range from 530 to 613 meters, a relatively gentle terrain, and 44.7% rock outcrop rate. It is unique that there is a deep fold, which exactly divides the whole plot into the same two parts. The average temperature in January, the coldest month is 8.2-16.2℃, and that of the hottest is 20.3-28.2℃. The mean annual precipitation is 1700-1900 mm.
The first census was finished in 2022. Some tree names were revised based on numerous observations of bark and drone in 2023 and 2024. The book titled as “Gulinqing Karst Tropical Rain Forest Dynamic Plot: Biodiversity and Tree Distribution Patterns” was published in 2025. Up to now, there are 97,672 free-standing individuals (DBH≥1 cm) in the plot, belonging to 381 species, 227 genera and 79 families, among which there are 81 tree species with 60 cm and more DBH. The maximal DBH is 286 cm and the mean value of BDH is 5.09 cm. The important values show that the dominant species are Pometia pinnata, Diospyros sumatrana, Mitrephora calcarea, Brassaiopsis grushvitzkyi, Parashorea chinensis, and Garcinia fagraeoides.
