In 1988, a Forest Dynamics Site was set up in Mudumalai Game Reserve in the eastern foothills of the Western Ghat Mountains of Southern India by the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and STRI.
The forest is a seasonally dry tropical forest with a distinct wet (June–December) and dry (January–May) season with the annual rainfall totaling approximately 1,500 mm.
