The Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO) is a global network of forest research plots and scientists dedicated to the study of forest function and diversity. ForestGEO conducts long-term, large-scale research on forests around the world to increase scientific understanding of forest ecosystems, guide sustainable forest management and natural-resource policies, monitor the impacts of environmental change, and build capacity in forest science.
This position will manage and coordinate the GEO-TREES program, a global network of research sites and scientists, aiming to build the world's first ground-based, open-access, equitably developed, forest biomass reference system. The incumbent will coordinate program activities, maintain accounting and reporting responsibilities, manage contractual agreements with international research partners, prepare summaries of research and program progress and needs, and manage logistical needs, development opportunities, and outreach initiatives for the network.
Major Duties:
- Manage day-to-day operational and administrative management of GEO-TREES including planning events, developing new funding opportunities, managing budgets and contracts, and developing the program’s work plan and implementation.

Facilitates program governance for GEO-TREES executive board, science advisory board, and technical implementation groups

Support strategic planning and implementation

Interprets scientific findings from the network

Facilitates development and maintenance of long-term partnerships with universities and research organizations around the world

Manages program financial resources including financial planning, budget formulation, and budget execution.

Administers academic appointments through fellowships and internships. Assists in planning and executes recruitment.

Strong written and communication skills

Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

Expert knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing large projects in scientific fields

Skill in analyzing various financial and administrative data

Ability to communicate tactfully in written and oral forms in order to collaborate effectively with a diverse team of people from various cultural and national backgrounds.

Skill to coordinate logistics in order to plan large events (workshops, trainings, meetings).

Skills in computer and software programs for accounting and financial management in order to track, monitor, and provide financial oversight for large projects.
This position will be based at the ForestGEO headquarters in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, USA, with the possibility of occasional telework. The role will be filled at the IS-13 level. This is a temporary appointment not to exceed two (2) year, with the possibility of extension. Some domestic and international travel will be required.
